MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting styles to be brought together (e.g. Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai). The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. The sport is one of the fastest growing in the world and can be seen in such events as the UFC, UCMMA and BAMMA. Our MMA classes focus predominantly on the “up close” work you would need in order to compete in a cage or ring fight, and the transition between the striking and grappling/ground game. Clinch work, striking, takedowns, submissions, “ground n’ pound” and escapes are all covered in expert detail.

Class Breakdown

We employ an ‘MMA Pyramid’ approach to training. Members are encouraged to develop skills in the 3 main pyramid ‘base sports’ (BJJ, Muay Thai and Boxing). These are then brought together in the MMA programme, which sits on top of the core sports to bring them together in training athletes for the cage (if that is their goal). The coach incorporates Wrestling and promotes cross-training with the Judo team to provide solid transitions skills. Classes generally consist of a warm-up and cardio work, technique drills and sparring.

Should that be the goal of our members, we are able to support them through the various levels of competition, with our proven MMA Pyramid approach and excellent coaching and development environment.

The gym caters for all levels of ability, no matter what your goals are, however, we do not offer boxercise!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant on the ground using leverage, joint-locks and choke-holds. It stresses movement, technique, flexibility and fitness. BJJ was popularized in the early days of the UFC in when it showed the world the importance of a good ground game in Mixed Martial Arts. Today it’s still considered the obvious choice to train groundwork for the ring. We have a growing presence in BJJ competition and this transfers into the classes, with students eager to learn and improve.

Our club is not affiliated with any other clubs or teams, we are open and welcome anyone who wants to train and compete, regardless of heritage.  We grade under our own name and are fully competitive and very proud of our team and its achievements.

Class Breakdown

Classes start with an intense warm-up using dynamic bodyweight exercises and BJJ techniques such as shrimping and rolls. The body of each session is technical instruction focussing around a certain position or set of techniques for the day, aiming for students to understand the principles behind the techniques as well as the movements themselves. To finish, students roll (BJJ sparring) to let them experiment more freely and try to apply what they’ve learned.

EQUIPMENT: Gi (Rashguard for No-Gi Grappling), Mouthguard Optional

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) is also known as the science of 8 limbs. It is a form of boxing, originating from Thailand and the fighting style is commonly known for its frequent use of clinches, elbows, knees, punches and kicks. You will learn offensive and defensive fighting techniques, including the importance of correct footwork and head movement. Classes generally consist of a warm-up and cardio work, technique drills and sparring. Our Thursday evening class, especially, includes sparring – we would encouraged more advanced members to attend this session.

Being a fully competitive gym, we are here to help Muay Thai and K1 fighters through all levels of competition, should that be their goal.

Judo (meaning “gentle way”) was created as a physical, mental and moral discipline in Japan, in 1882, by Jigoro Kano. It is generally categorized as a modern martial art which later evolved into a combat and Olympic sport. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but are not allowed in judo competition or free practice. The worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
